About the Olympics in London
The Games of the XXX (30th) Olympiad will be held in London, England in the summer of 2012. London was selected as the host city beating out competitive host bids from New York, Paris, Moscow, and Madrid. Rio de Janeiro submitted a bid but was eliminated in an earlier round. Rio successfully bid on the 2016 Olympics and was selected the winner for those games.
2012 will be the third time the summer Olympics will be held in London with previous games played in 1908 and 1948. London will be the only city in the world with the distinction of hosting three games.
Over 200 countries are expected to compete in 25 different sports in a total of over 300 events. The opening ceremony is planned for July 27, 2012 with the closing ceremony on August 12, 2012.
The Venues
The 2012 Olympics events will be scattered throughout London. Notably, a large area to the East of The City (i.e., downtown London) has been designated as the Olympic Park and Olympic Village. Most athletes will be housed here, the Olympic Stadium, and several various sports facilities will be located here.
Other venues include world famous Wimbledon for Tennis, Wembley Stadium for Football (American soccer), the ExCel Centre, the Millenium Dome arena, and various parks and facilities.
Visiting the city of London
With 7.5 million residents, the capital of Great Britain is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Amid it's historic architecture, world class museums, the pageantry of the monarchy, and such famous sporting traditions as Wimbledon, Ascot, and Rugby, Cricket, and Football, London is a fitting city to host the most-watched sporting event on the planet.
London's two major airports are Heathrow to the West and Gatwick to the South. Both airports are well served by public transit options as well as taxis, buses, and rental cars. Visitors for the Olympics are encouraged to rely on public transit options so it will be best to identify which sporting events you expect to attend and try to stay close to those venues. Many events will be held in or around the Olympic Park and Greenwich areas. Of course, that means the hotels in those areas will likely be the most pricey. However, staying in central areas of London are feasible since train and bus service will be plentiful to the various venues.
